Guided implant surgery uses a 3D scan of your jaw to plan the exact position, angle and depth of every dental implant before treatment begins. That plan is then transferred to your mouth with a custom surgical guide, so placement in the operatory matches the plan on the screen. The result is a shorter, calmer appointment and an implant positioned for the best possible long-term result.
How It Works
- 3D cone-beam CT scan: We capture a three-dimensional image of your jaw, showing bone volume and density as well as the position of nerves and sinuses.
- Digital planning: Your scan is merged with a digital impression of your teeth so the implant can be planned around the final crown, not the other way around.
- Custom surgical guide: A guide is made from that plan and seats over your teeth or gums, directing the drill to the planned position.
- Placement: The implant is placed through the guide, usually through a small opening rather than a large incision.
Why It Matters
Precision is not a luxury in implant dentistry — it determines how the finished tooth looks, how comfortably it bites and how long it lasts. Planning in 3D lets us:
- Keep a safe distance from nerves, sinuses and neighboring roots.
- Use the bone you already have, which can reduce or avoid the need for grafting.
- Place the implant where the crown needs it, so the final tooth emerges naturally from the gum.
- Work through smaller openings, which generally means less swelling and a faster recovery.
Is It Right for Me?
Guided surgery suits most implant cases, from a single missing tooth to a full arch. It is especially valuable when bone is limited, when the site sits close to the sinus or the lower nerve, or when several implants must be placed in a coordinated position. At your consultation we will take the scan, review the anatomy with you and explain exactly what we are planning and why.
What to Expect Afterward
Most people are comfortable with over-the-counter pain relief and return to normal activity the next day. The implant then integrates with your bone over the following months before the final crown, bridge or denture is attached. We will see you along the way to confirm healing is on track.
